The ridge moves, quietly

Charlestown sits on the region's high ground, and much of it sits within a declared mine subsidence district, the administrative memory of the coal seams underneath. We're not the people to assess ground movement, and we don't pretend to be. What we see is the door-scale symptom: a frame gone a few millimetres out of square, a sectional scraping one track, a tilt door that catches at the same corner every time. On the ridge's split-level blocks, where the garage is often half-buried in the slope, that's the first thing we check before blaming the door itself.

The doors of this sheet

• Warners Bay fronts the lake on a flat that has flooded more than once in living memory. Doors here get their bottom rails and seals looked at first; water finds the lowest steel.
• Speers Point and Boolaroo mix lakeside homes with the top end's through-traffic; established stock, honest wear, no drama.
• Charlestown and Mount Hutton bring the ridge's split-levels and the frame-squareness question above.
• Cardiff and Glendale are the post-war heartland: brick-and-tile and fibro streets where a lot of doors still run their original hardware, which means springs quietly near the end of their count.
• Cameron Park is the estate frontier, thousands of dwellings when its stages finish, effectively a suburb of builder-fit sectionals heading toward their first real service. We'd rather do that tune-up now than the spring call later.
